BitDance, the owners of TikTok, has applied to the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry for a return under the name TickTock (literally TickTock).

    On the 6th of this month, he applied for a trademark under Schedule 42 of the Fourth Schedule of the 2002 Trademark Act. The application is published on the Comptroller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks website. This does not mean that Tic Tac Toe will return soon. This is only the first step in the plans to return to India. The current status of this application on the website is ‘Marked for Exam’. This means that the return of Tick Tock will now depend on the decision taken by the Central Government in this application.

    Within months of the ban, the company had taken steps to comply with data privacy and central government security requirements, but Tic Tac Toe did not succeed. Later there were reports that BitDance tried to lure Reliance Industries for investment but was unsuccessful. Attempts to sell Inpobi, the owners of Tic Tac Toe’s Raposo, in February this year were also abandoned halfway. With this, about 2000 employees were laid off from BitDance India.

    At the time of the ban, Tick Tock had 20 crore customers in India. Most of it went to rivals like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shots, MX Takatak, Josh and Moj. It remains to be seen whether these customers will return to Tic Tac Toe.
